Energy Support & Trust Funds – Consumer Guidance

Energy Back-Billing Rules

Energy suppliers cannot charge you for gas or electricity used more than 12 months ago if they failed to bill you correctly or did not inform you via an account statement. This rule also applies if a supplier raises your Direct Debit because they previously set it too low. They cannot use this to reclaim underpayments older than a year. These protections apply to households and most small business customers unless the customer has prevented accurate billing, such as by refusing meter access or tampering with equipment.

Energy Trust Funds – Support for Customers in Arears

Several charitable funds exist to help people who have fallen behind on gas and electricity bills. These funds are intended to support customers experiencing hardship or long-term debt issues.

Important Note on Back Billing

Suppliers can only recover up to 12 months of unpaid charges if they ‘forgot’ or failed to bill you. Some companies allow debt to build up before issuing a sudden catch-up bill. If this happens, you should submit a formal complaint, as it may breach Ofgem’s back-billing rules.

Available Trust Funds

If your supplier isn’t listed, support may still be available through the
Let’s Talk Energy Fund, administered by Charis.

Before Applying

Each fund has its own application process, required documents and qualifying criteria. Always check the latest guidance on the provider’s website or contact them directly.
